Gamepad tester

Connect the controller and press any button. Step 2 then shows live readings for 17 standard buttons, 2 sticks and 2 triggers. When you release a stick, its reading should return close to 0; if not, the stick may be drifting.

Connect the controller (current step)

Please connect the controller with a cable or Bluetooth, then press any button on it. The browser does not show a controller until a button is pressed.

How to use

  1. Connect the controller with a cable or Bluetooth, then press any button on it.
  2. Press each button. The same button lights up on the picture in step 2 and stays marked afterwards.
  3. Move both sticks in full circles, then release them and check the centre offset in step 4.
  4. Test the strong and weak vibration motors in step 3 and check whether the controller vibrates.

Common questions

How can I tell if a stick is drifting?
When you release a stick, its reading should return close to 0. A clear centre offset, or a dot that keeps moving slowly after release, indicates drift. Games usually ignore small readings near the centre, so a slight offset does not affect play.
Is it normal for a trigger to read only 0 or 1?
An analogue trigger reads from 0 up to 1 as you press it. If it reads only 0 or 1, the trigger is a digital button, or the controller's current mode does not provide analogue readings.
Why is the vibration test not available?
Only Chrome, Edge and Safari 16.4 or later on a Mac provide the vibration interface. Firefox and browsers on iPhone and iPad do not support it. Some controllers have no vibration motors.
Can I test a controller on my phone?
Yes. Connect the controller to an Android phone by Bluetooth, open this page in Chrome and press any button.

If the controller does not appear

This page reads buttons and sticks through the gamepad interface built into the browser. If the controller does not appear after you connect it, please check the items below.

Connection

Press a button first
The browser does not show a controller until you press one of its buttons. After you connect it, please press any button.
Wired and Bluetooth
For a wired controller, plug it in and press a button. Pair a Bluetooth controller in the system Bluetooth settings first.
Mode switch
Some controllers have a mode switch. If the buttons do not match the picture, please change the mode and test again. For a non-standard mapping, use the raw readings.
More than one controller
This page shows up to 4 controllers. You can switch between them in step 1.

Vibration and drift

Vibration
Vibration can be tested in Chrome, Edge and Safari 16.4 or later on a Mac. Firefox and browsers on iPhone and iPad do not support it. Some controllers have no vibration motors.
Stick drift
When you release a stick, the reading should return close to 0. The further it stays from 0, the stronger the drift. Games usually ignore small readings near the centre; this range is called the dead zone. You can calibrate the stick with the system settings or the controller software.
Triggers
An analogue trigger reads from 0 to 1 continuously. A trigger that reads only 0 or 1 is a digital button.
