How it is calculated

  1. Taxable income = salary − standard deduction (₹75,000 in the new regime, ₹50,000 in the old regime, not more than the salary) + other income − deductions (old regime only). It is rounded to the nearest ₹10.
  2. Tax is calculated on each slab of taxable income at the rate for that slab (see the table below).
  3. Rebate under section 156 (formerly section 87A): in the new regime, no tax is payable if taxable income does not exceed ₹12 lakh (rebate up to ₹60,000). Above ₹12 lakh, the tax is limited to the income above ₹12 lakh (marginal relief). In the old regime, the rebate is up to ₹12,500 if taxable income does not exceed ₹5 lakh.
  4. Surcharge on tax: 10% above ₹50 lakh, 15% above ₹1 crore, 25% above ₹2 crore, and 37% above ₹5 crore in the old regime only. Marginal relief limits the extra tax and surcharge to the income above each threshold.
  5. Health and Education Cess is 4% of tax plus surcharge. The total is rounded to the nearest ₹10.
  6. All calculations are done in your browser. The details you enter are not sent to any server.
