Settings explained

Times forwarded
The more times, the stronger the blocks and the colour shift. Range: 1 times to 30 times.
Compression quality
JPEG quality. A smaller value makes the blocks more visible. Range: 5 to 90.
Forwarded size
The long side of the picture when forwarded. A smaller size makes it more blurred. Range: 240 pixels to 1600 pixels.
Yellow-green tint
Each time it is forwarded, the colours turn slightly more yellow-green. Range: 0 to 100.
Noise
Grain added before compression. Range: 0 to 100.
Blur
Number of times the picture is blurred after forwarding. Range: 0 to 10.
Saturation
100% means no change. Range: 50% to 200%.
Contrast
100% means no change. Range: 50% to 200%.
Sharpen
Sharpens the picture once at the end. Edges look hard and white outlines appear.

How the picture is processed

  • The picture is first reduced to the forwarded size; saturation and contrast are adjusted and noise is added.
  • Each time it is forwarded, the picture is resized again, the colours turn slightly yellow-green, and it is compressed once as a JPEG at the selected quality. On every second round it is reduced to 94%, so the compression blocks do not line up and the loss builds up each time.
  • After the last round, blur and sharpening are applied as set. The same picture with the same settings always gives the same result.
  • The result is downloaded as a JPG (quality 92). You can choose the original size or the forwarded size. Pictures with a long side over 4096 pixels are saved at 4096 pixels. Transparent areas are filled with white or black.
  • All processing is done in your browser.

The idea of this effect comes from the open-source project itorr/patina. This tool's processing has been written separately by this website.
