Common questions
- What is the difference between bright, dead and stuck pixels?
- A bright pixel stays lit on black. A dead pixel stays dark on white. A stuck pixel shows the wrong colour on red, green or blue, usually because one sub-pixel stays on or off.
- Can a dead pixel be fixed?
- Dead pixels and pixels that stay lit are usually panel defects and generally cannot be fixed by software. This page does not offer a fast-flashing “fix” pattern: fast flashing can trigger photosensitive epilepsy, and there is no evidence that it works.
- How many dead pixels qualify for a return?
- Each manufacturer sets its own rules on the number and position of pixel faults. The warranty terms of your product or the return policy of the seller apply.
- Can I test a phone or a TV?
- Yes. Open this page in the browser on the phone or TV. Browsers on iPhone cannot show a web page in full screen, so please hold the phone sideways and check every part of the screen.
What to look for
Dead pixels show only against certain solid colours. Please check each colour as described below.
Types of pixel faults
- Bright pixel
- A white or coloured dot that stays lit on a black background.
- Dead pixel
- A black dot that does not light up on a white background.
- Stuck pixel
- A dot with the wrong colour on a red, green or blue background. Usually one sub-pixel stays on or stays off.
How to check
- Clean the screen first
- Dust can look like a dead pixel. Only a dot that stays in place after you wipe the screen with a soft cloth is a pixel fault.
- Brightness and colour
- Please raise the screen brightness and turn off eye comfort, night mode and other features that change colours.
- Full screen
- Press Esc to leave full screen. Browsers on iPhone cannot show a web page in full screen, so please hold the phone sideways and check every part of the screen.
- Record the position
- If you find a fault, please take a photograph with your phone and note its position. Manufacturers set different rules for pixel faults. The warranty terms of your product apply to returns and repairs.
