How it is calculated

  1. To add or subtract, write both fractions over the lowest common denominator, then add or subtract the numerators.
  2. To multiply, multiply the numerators and the denominators. To divide, multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction.
  3. The answer is simplified by the highest common factor. When the numerator is larger than the denominator, it is also written as a mixed number.
  4. A fraction is converted to a decimal by long division. When a remainder occurs again, the digits from its first occurrence onwards repeat. They are marked with a line above them.
  5. A negative mixed number is negative as a whole: −2 1/3 = −7/3.
