How to use

  1. Please enter the text on the left or upload a TXT or SRT file. Choose the direction and the traditional standard on the right. The result updates as you type.
  2. The Taiwan standard uses 裡 and 著, and the Hong Kong standard uses 裏 and 着. General traditional characters follow the OpenCC standard forms.
  3. Conversion works word by word. When one simplified character has more than one traditional form, the form is chosen by the word it is in. Personal names, place names and classical texts may still be converted incorrectly, so please check the result before formal use.
  4. Uploaded files are first read as UTF-8. If this fails, GB18030 (simplified) and then Big5 (traditional) are tried. If the text looks garbled, please choose another file encoding. Downloaded files are saved in UTF-8.

Conversion uses opencc-js (MIT licence) and the Open Chinese Convert (OpenCC) dictionaries (Apache-2.0 licence). The dictionaries, about 1 MB, are downloaded from this website to your browser the first time you convert. Your text and files are not uploaded to any server.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the Taiwan and Hong Kong standards?
A small number of characters are written differently, for example 裡 and 著 in Taiwan but 裏 and 着 in Hong Kong. Please choose the standard used by your readers. If you are not sure, choose general traditional characters.
Does converting an SRT file change the timing?
No. Cue numbers, timecodes, English text and digits are not changed. Only Chinese characters are converted. The downloaded file name ends with the target standard, for example movie.zh-TW.srt.
