How it is calculated

  1. Federal income tax withholding follows the IRS Publication 15-T (2026) Worksheet 1A and the annual percentage method tables for a 2020 or later Form W-4.
  2. Annual wages = (gross pay − pre-tax 401(k) contributions) × pay periods. The adjusted annual wage amount = annual wages − $12,900 (married filing jointly) or $8,600 (other statuses); nothing is deducted if Step 2 is checked.
  3. Withholding per paycheck = (tax from the table on the adjusted annual wage amount ÷ pay periods) − (Step 3 credits ÷ pay periods), not less than $0, plus Step 4(c) extra withholding.
  4. Social Security = 6.2% of wages up to $184,500 in 2026. Medicare = 1.45% of all wages. Additional Medicare Tax of 0.9% is withheld on wages above $200,000 in the year. 401(k) contributions are still subject to Social Security and Medicare.
  5. State and local tax = (gross pay − 401(k) contributions) × the rate you enter. Amounts are rounded to the cent.
  6. Not included: Form W-4 Step 4(a) and 4(b), bonuses and other supplemental wages, health insurance and HSA deductions, and state payroll taxes such as SDI.
  7. All calculations are done in your browser. The details you enter are not sent to any server.
