Speaker test

If “Left” plays only on the left and “Right” plays only on the right, your left and right channels are correct. The page also plays a 20 Hz to 20 kHz sweep and, when the system output is 5.1, tests each of the 6 channels.

Set the volume (current step)

Please set the system volume low first and then raise it gradually.

The sweep lasts 15 seconds and rises from 20 Hz bass to 20 kHz treble on both sides.

Check the results

After you play each channel, record the results here.

How to use

  1. Set the system volume low first. Wear your headphones, or sit between the two speakers.
  2. In step 2, select “Left” and check that only the left side plays. Then select “Right” and check that only the right side plays.
  3. Record the result for each channel in step 3.
  4. To check bass and treble, play the sweep and note where the sound stops or becomes distorted.

Common questions

What if left and right are reversed?
For headphones, please check the L and R marks. For speakers, please check their positions and how the left and right cables are connected to the computer. When “Mono audio” is turned on in the accessibility settings, both sides play the same sound.
Is it normal not to hear part of the sweep?
Most people hear up to between 15 kHz and 20 kHz, and the limit falls with age. Small speakers also rarely reproduce bass below 100 Hz. It is common not to hear the two ends of the sweep.
How do I test 5.1 surround sound?
Set the output device to 5.1 in the system sound settings first. When the browser can output 6 channels, 5.1 buttons appear in step 2.
Can I test my phone?
Yes. Open this page in the browser on your phone to test headphones and the phone speakers. On an iPhone, please turn off silent mode first.

If you cannot hear the sound

The browser plays the sound of this page through the same output device as other programs on your system. Please check the items below.

Headphones worn the wrong way round
Headphones are usually marked L (left) and R (right). Please wear them as marked.
Speaker position and cables
Please check the position of the left and right speakers and how their cables are connected to the computer.
Mono audio
When “Mono audio” is turned on in the accessibility settings, both channels are mixed and both sides play the same sound. Please turn it off and test again.
Unequal left and right volume
Please check in the system sound output settings that the left and right volume (balance) are equal.
