- The photograph must be a recent colour photograph taken within the last 6 months, facing forward, without a hat, 4.5 cm high and 3.5 cm wide (without borders).
- The head, from the top to the chin, must be 3.2 cm to 3.6 cm (the face covering 70% to 80% of the photograph), centred.
- The photograph must not be edited, combined or mirrored. Selfies taken with a mobile phone are often mirrored or distorted by a wide-angle lens.
- The file must be in RGB colour (at least 24-bit).

The file requirements apply to photographs uploaded through the online passport application and appointment system of the Bureau of Consular Affairs, or by a travel agency. Applicants in Taiwan who upload a photograph generally need not bring two printed photographs; please check the Bureau's page for exceptions.
