Why convert AVIF to JPG
- To insert AVIF images in Microsoft Office, you must install the AV1 Video Extension. JPG images can be inserted without it.[1]
- Edge can display AVIF only from version 121. Older browsers cannot open AVIF images.[2]
- The National Testing Agency (NTA) requires the photograph for the JEE (Main) 2027 application in JPG/JPEG format, between 10 kB and 200 kB.[3]
How to convert
- “Convert to JPG” is already selected in Step 1. For a smaller file, please lower the quality.
- In Step 2, choose or drag in your AVIF files. You can add several at once, and conversion starts automatically.
- In Step 3, check the results and download one image, or all images as a ZIP file.
What changes after converting AVIF to JPG
- JPG does not support transparency. Transparent areas of the original are filled with the colour chosen in Step 1 (white by default).[2]
- The JPEG standard covers still images only. If the original is animated, only the first frame is kept.[4]
- The converted image does not contain the shooting information (EXIF) of the original, such as the date, camera model and location. The image is turned upright according to the orientation recorded in the original.
Frequently asked questions
- What colour do transparent backgrounds become in JPG?
- JPG does not support transparency. Under the HTML standard, a web page that exports such an image directly places transparent areas on a black background, which is why some tools produce a black background. This tool first fills the background with the colour chosen in Step 1 (white by default), then exports the image.[2][5]
- What quality setting should I use?
- Set the quality in Step 1. The range is 10–100, and the default is 90. A higher value gives better quality and a larger file. If the upload has a size limit, lower the quality and check the converted size in the list in Step 2.
- Is the JPG file larger or smaller than the original AVIF file?
- AOMedia states that AVIF files are more than 50% smaller than JPEG files. The JPG file is usually larger than the original AVIF file; you can lower the quality in Step 1. The size of each file before and after conversion is shown in the list in Step 2.[6]
- Can I convert several images at once?
- Yes. You can select or drag in up to 100 images at a time. When all images are converted, you can download them one by one or together as one ZIP file.
About the AVIF format
- AVIF is defined by the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia). It encodes images with AV1 and stores them in a HEIF container.[7]
- AVIF supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, animation, HDR and wide colour gamut. AOMedia states that AVIF files are more than 50% smaller than JPEG files.[6]
- Chrome 85, Firefox 93, Safari 16.1, Edge 121 and later versions can display AVIF.[2][8]
- To insert AVIF images in Microsoft Office, you must install the free AV1 Video Extension.[1]
