Why convert GIF to PNG

  • GIF and PNG both use lossless compression, so converting to PNG causes no loss of quality. Areas that are fully transparent in the GIF stay transparent in the PNG.[1][2]
  • PNG is not limited to 256 colours and supports partial transparency. The PNG can be edited further without these GIF limits.[1][2]

How to convert

  1. “Convert to PNG” is already selected in Step 1.
  2. In Step 2, choose or drag in your GIF files. You can add several at once, and conversion starts automatically.
  3. In Step 3, check the results and download one image, or all images as a ZIP file.

What changes after converting GIF to PNG

  • This tool exports still images. If the original is animated, only the first frame is kept.
  • The converted image does not contain the shooting information (EXIF) of the original, such as the date, camera model and location. The image is turned upright according to the orientation recorded in the original.

Frequently asked questions

Is the PNG file larger or smaller than the original GIF file?
The file size depends on the image content. The size of each file before and after conversion is shown in the list in Step 2.
Can I convert several images at once?
Yes. You can select or drag in up to 100 images at a time. When all images are converted, you can download them one by one or together as one ZIP file.
