Why convert GIF to JPG

  • The National Testing Agency (NTA) requires the photograph for the JEE (Main) 2027 application in JPG/JPEG format, between 10 kB and 200 kB.[1]
  • The US Department of State requires digital photographs for visa applications in JPEG format, not more than 240 kB.[2]

How to convert

  1. “Convert to JPG” is already selected in Step 1. For a smaller file, please lower the quality.
  2. In Step 2, choose or drag in your GIF files. You can add several at once, and conversion starts automatically.
  3. In Step 3, check the results and download one image, or all images as a ZIP file.

What changes after converting GIF to JPG

  • JPG does not support transparency. Transparent areas of the original are filled with the colour chosen in Step 1 (white by default).[3]
  • The JPEG standard covers still images only. If the original is animated, only the first frame is kept.[4]
  • The converted image does not contain the shooting information (EXIF) of the original, such as the date, camera model and location. The image is turned upright according to the orientation recorded in the original.

Frequently asked questions

What colour do transparent backgrounds become in JPG?
JPG does not support transparency. Under the HTML standard, a web page that exports such an image directly places transparent areas on a black background, which is why some tools produce a black background. This tool first fills the background with the colour chosen in Step 1 (white by default), then exports the image.[3][5]
What quality setting should I use?
Set the quality in Step 1. The range is 10–100, and the default is 90. A higher value gives better quality and a larger file. If the upload has a size limit, lower the quality and check the converted size in the list in Step 2.
Is the JPG file larger or smaller than the original GIF file?
Each GIF frame has up to 256 colours. A JPG file does not have this limit, but conversion does not add colours that were not in the original. The file size depends on the quality and the image content. The size of each file before and after conversion is shown in the list in Step 2.[3]
Can I convert several images at once?
Yes. You can select or drag in up to 100 images at a time. When all images are converted, you can download them one by one or together as one ZIP file.

About the GIF format

  • CompuServe introduced GIF in 1987. The current version is GIF89a, from 1989.[3][6]
  • Each GIF frame can have up to 256 colours. GIF uses lossless compression and supports simple animation.[3][6]
  • In a GIF, only one colour can be made fully transparent. Partial transparency is not possible.[3][6]
